Some of our favorite summer memories include popsicles by the pool, jumping into cold ocean water, hiking & biking with friends, grilling outside, and unhurried afternoons with a good book. Summer often brings a mix of adventure and ease—social gatherings and travel balanced by lazier days of rest and reflection.

And yet, for many school leaders, summer isn’t exactly a break. It can be a time of catch-up, planning, and working through that ever-growing to-do list. But if we want to return in August energized and engaged, we must build in moments of margin, time that is unscheduled, restorative, and intentional.

1. Rest

How will you create space for true rest this summer?
Rest can take many forms, but one thing is clear: we make time for what we value. Whether it’s a long walk, a nap, a tech-free afternoon, or simply quiet time on the porch, carve out space for rest—and schedule it. Plan ahead for intentional downtime, not just in the summer but throughout the school year. Consider blocking PTO or renewal days in your calendar now, before the school year pace takes over.

2. Reflect

What went well this year that you want to replicate? What needs a reset?
Reflection deepens learning and helps us lead with intention. Try journaling a start–stop–iterate list, or take a reflection walk in nature. If you’re more verbal, record a voice memo or talk through insights with a colleague. The key is to make reflection a scheduled practice, not just a passing thought.

3. Refuel

What refills your cup and reignites your passion for learning?
For many of us, refueling comes through curiosity, connection, and creativity. This summer, consider launching a small passion project, something you’re genuinely interested in that could also bring value to your community next year.

At Mount Vernon, we use the Compass Field Guide Adventure Grid to support sustained inquiry. It’s a simple but powerful tool to map your summer learning journey:

Make Margin a Mindset

This summer, don’t just work on your school, work on yourself. Rest, reflect, and refuel so that you return with clarity, purpose, and joy. Creating margin isn’t a luxury; it’s a leadership strategy. When you prioritize your own renewal, you model what it means to lead with intention and inspire others to do the same.
